C&O Canal National Historical Park - 184 Miles of Smiles

Preserving America's early transportation history, the C&O Canal began as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. Today it endures as a pathway for discovering historical, natural and recreational treasures!

Washington County boasts 78 miles of the C&O Canal National Historical Park, stretching East to West from Knoxville to Hancock. The Canal's legacy is vividly etched into the fabric of its three Canal Towns: Hancock, Sharpsburg, and Williamsport. Bordered by the Potomac River, from Hancock, the westernmost point, near Sideling Hill, to the historically rich Sharpsburg, nestled near the Antietam Battlefield, and the bustling port of Williamsport, each town tells a unique chapter of the canal's story.

Adventures await! Whether you're seeking historical immersion, outdoor recreation, or a taste of local culture, the C&O Canal in Washington County provides a unique blend of past and present.
