Artist William Singer and his wife, Hagerstown native, Anna Brugh Singer, founded the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in 1928. After traveling to Norway in the 1910s, the Singers developed a passion for the country and later moved to the village of Olden, where William captured the spirit and magnificence of this land’s natural beauty. Drawing upon the museum's collection, this exhibition features paintings, drawings, and prints of Norway’s landscapes, myths, and people by William and his contemporaries, most notably Jacob Dooijewaard, Frank Morse-Rummel, and Martin Borgord. Landscapes & Legends explores how these artists, some of whom were friends or colleagues, responded to nature and Norwegian culture in different ways. This exhibition places the artists in their broad cultural and historical context through a display of archival materials, including catalogues, letters, newspaper articles, and photographs. Visitors will have the special opportunity to view some of William Singer’s delicately rendered and seldom seen pastels. Exhibitions run May 27-Sept. 17, 2023.
